Mattel's First Action Figure for Girls Get the Superhero Treatment
Mattel might be best known for its line of fashionable Barbies quipped with dream homes, high heels, and pink convertibles, but the manufacturer's latest line of dolls comes with a more adventurous set of accessories: capes, swords, and lassos, to name a few.
A collaboration between the toy company and publisher DC Comics, DC Super Hero Girls is a new series of seven action figures designed to introduce heroines like Wonder Woman and Supergirl to a new audience: 6 to 12 year old girls.
In a statement earlier this month, president of DC Entertainment Diane Nelson positioned the dolls as part of the company's long term strategy for offering "a diverse array of strong female characters" in a variety of platforms including television, books, and movies.
The superhero dolls, which were unveiled at New York Comic Con last weekend, will roll out next year along with an accompanying web series and graphic novel. They're being marketed as Mattel's first ever action figures designed for girls.
What do you think...do you think companies like DC Comics, Marvel and others should stop shutting out female superheros from the superhero club instead or do you think they should separate the two genders from one another?
